Tofu was first made about 2,000 years ago in China. It is made from soybean curds, similar to how cheese is made. It is naturally gluten-free, low in calories, high in protein and highly nutritious!

Thankfully, tofu is so common that it is available in most supermarkets.

There are so many ways to prepare tofu. It works well in salads, ramen, with vegetables, in stir-fry, or it can even be turned into burger patties, croquettes, and so on.

Here’s how to make extra crispy tofu in under 10 minutes

List of ingredients

  • extra firm tofu or firm tofu
  • corn flour/starch
  • salt
  • paprika powder
  • vegetable oil
  • and any other spices or herbs of your liking

Cut

Cut your block of firm tofu into small even bite-sized cubes.

Press

Place those pieces inside a clean, folded towel and press the tofu with a flat, heavy object. Leave it like that for about 5 minutes. That way, the towel absorbs most of the moisture, and the tofu becomes crispier when cooked.

Coating

Next, place it in a bowl and add enough corn flour so that all the pieces are evenly coated. Now you can add the paprika powder, salt and all the other herbs and spices you like!

Frying

Add enough oil into a pan to cover the bottom, and turn on the heat. Before putting the tofu in, make sure the oil is hot enough.

Sizzle

You should be able to hear the tofu sizzling and bubbling once you put it in the oil. Cook for about 5 minutes, flip the tofu bites and let them sizzle for two more minutes.

Patience

With tofu, the secret ingredient is patience! Since your pan and stove might differ, your tofu might be ready quicker or slower. Keep an eye out for the colour, and don’t give up!

At some point, your tofu cubes should be crispy and golden brown.

Kitchen paper

Remove them from the pan and place them on some kitchen paper for the excess oil to drain. There shouldn’t be much of it, though.

Enjoy when it is still warm! :)
